Del’s tour is not to be missed. It is nothing less than yet another victory lap for one this country’s most important artists. The one time Bill Monroe sideman is on fire with his career-spanning 5-CD box set, CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF DEL MCCOURY, hitting stores on May 12th and even more great news in the works. The highly esteemed Elvis Costello recently commented, “Del gives hope to everybody…To keep the purity that you need to do this kind of music, and the drive and energy, that takes a special kind of guy.”
“Here’s a guy who has been playing for fifty years, and he’s still experimenting—still looking to do things outside the box, to bring other kinds of music into bluegrass form,” adds Americana music icon Richard Thompson, who saw his “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” turned into a bluegrass standard when McCoury brought it into the fold. “I think that’s the best bluegrass band, period. That’s it.”
These are fitting words for a legend whose influence has been growing steadily with each passing year. In addition to racking up countless awards, including not only a Grammy and 3 dozen IBMA’s, Del’s influence reaches far beyond his bluegrass disciples, from 2008 Album of the Year winner Alison Krauss (whom he first met when she sat in with him at the tender age of 14) to Dierks Bentley, Vince Gill, Steve Earle and Jamband favorites Phish, Leftover Salmon and Younder Mountain Stringband, who have all graced his stage.
